Weather conditions for the week ahead

weather conditions

Ireland’s extreme weather conditions continue this week, with brief respite expected today and tomorrow (Tuesday and Wednesday). Brace yourselves for more heavy rain countrywide from Thursday onwards into the weekend.

Farmers and gardeners will be happy to see the rain though, as a lengthy dry spell has created near-drought conditions in many areas. In the east of Ireland, between 50mm and 80mm of rain is needed to bring the soil back to normal saturation levels. Soil deficits across the rest of the country range from 10mm to 50mm.

Meanwhile, yesterday’s deluge caused flash flooding in some areas creating tricky driving conditions, delays in public transport, and even power cuts.

Motorists are reminded to take care on the roads to avoid the potential for aquaplaning and slipping on the roads made precarious due to rubber build-up from tyres.

National outlook

The Irish Meterological Service calls it “changeable with occasional showers or longer spells of rain”.

Thursday will dawn cloudy and damp morning with further showers or longer spells of rain crossing the country eastwards during the day, turning heavier at times. There may be sunny spells in the evening. Scattered showers will move in from the west later on.

These will continue on Friday with sunny intervals. Current indications suggest that the weekend will be changeable with further showers and spells of rain.
