Food producers on show at Tipperary Food Tours

Tipperary Food Tours Blackcastle Farm

Tipperary Food Tours give locals and tourists the opportunity to visit the homes and farms of some of the area’s hard-working producers. These experiences with Tipperary farmers offer insight into day-to-day life, and the processes involved in creating some of Ireland’s finest quality food and drink produce.

The venture is an initiative by the 36-member strong Network and Tipperary Tourism, who are motivated to engage in shared learning and resources, and to share in each other’s foods. The vision being to position Tipperary as the cradle of nourishment, by virtue of its natural environment and the integrity of its food producers.

The network includes cheesemakers and beekeepers, fruit farmers and cider makers, butchers and bakers, sauce and jam-makers. They also have producers of ice-cream and sorbet, rapeseed oil, sweets, chocolates and crisps, plus tortillas and peanut butter.

Some tour options include a visit to Blackcastle Farm, a biodiversity focused Bord Bia approved farm outside Two Mile Borris, Thurles, where John Commins has a herd of purebred Piedmontese cattle. Beef products include traditional beef cuts, beef sausages, Bresaola, Carne Salada, Pastrami and other beef charcuterie.

Blackcastle Farm has a full programme of workshops in their 200-year-old sustainably restored cow shed focused on food and sustainable living. Workshops include seasonal and cultural cooking, smoking, curing, and preserving foods, building a back-yard smoker or clay oven, growing food, herbs and spices, a river biodiversity walk, catching and cooking fish, and enhancing biodiversity in your space. Tullahay Farm also offers a Meet Our Dairy Herd experience. Visit this farm located in a picturesque valley near Slievenamon.
