Youth call to action on World Environment Day

World Environment Day

An ECO-UNESCO ECO-Watchers workshop will be held at Scoil Mhuire in Swanlinbar, Co Cavan, to celebrate World Environment Day on 5 June, 2022.

World Environment Day is the United Nations’ principal vehicle for encouraging worldwide awareness and action for the environment. Over the years it has grown to be a broad, global platform for public outreach that is widely celebrated by stakeholders in more than 100 countries.

What’s more, it serves as the “people’s day” for doing something positive for the environment. The day galvanizes individual actions into a collective power that generates an exponential positive impact on the planet.

“Although individual decisions may seem small in the face of global threats and trends, when billions of people join forces in common purpose, we can make a tremendous difference,” said UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon.

The theme of this year’s World Environment Day is “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”. The goal of sustainable development is to increase the quality of life for all people without increasing environmental degradation, and without compromising the resource needs of future generations.

ECO-UNESCO’s Environmental Youth Officer will be spending the day in Scoil Mhuire in Swanlinbar, Co. Cavan, delivering ECO-Watchers workshops on Energy. The workshops will cover human, manmade, and renewable energy. They will also focus on how we use energy, and how it affects the environment around us. Groups will look at their own energy use and how they can save energy at home and at school.
