Anti-meat campaign may affect livestock farmer’s subsidies

Anti-meat campaign

An anti-meat campaign, themed ‘a world without slaughterhouses’, is pushing for a reduction in subsidies for livestock farmers. The initiative has been green lighted by the the European Commission, who has agreed to register the campaign, which is designed to pull funding from livestock farmers.

The venture needs one million signatures gathered across at least seven member states to be successful. If the target is met, the Commission will be forced to present the initiative to the European Parliament for consideration.

This European Citizens Initiative (ECI) supports cell farming and plant proteins, proposing the consumption of cultivated and vegetable meat over real meat.

The anti-meat campaign is slugged, End the Slaughter Age.

The Commission has said that (ECI) can begin within the next six months, but European association, the European Livestock and Meat Trades Union (UECBV), has raised concerns about the Commission’s apparent openness to put into question the whole livestock sector, practices and professionalism.

It will debate how to respond at the next meat industry section meeting on 10 June 2022 in Brussels, the EU has said.
