MEPs have overwhelmingly voted in favour of the €5 billion Brexit Adjustment Reserve with one fifth of the amount being allocated to Ireland. The European Parliament and the European Council agreed on the reserve fund which was supported by a majority of MEPs. The Department of Agriculture is considering phasing out the leasing of entitlements by introducing a ‘use them or lose’ them system. The plan would end the practice of ‘armchair’ farming and put entitlements in the hands of active and younger farmers. Leasing entitlements have increased from 2,870 in 2015 to 14,348 last year.  Once the current CAP programme ends next year only genuine farmers would benefit from CAP payments.  The…

In a move to help curb greenhouse emissions, scientists have succeeded in potty-training cows by teaching them to urinate in a specially built toilet. German experts from its Research Institute for Farm Animal Biology have designed the so-called MooLoo which can collect ammonia from the waste so it can be treated. A new EU ruling outlining increased price reporting obligations on processors and retailers, has been welcomed by the Irish Cattle and Sheep Farmers’ Association (ICSA).
