UK dairy farmers are throwing away milk due to shortage of lorry drivers

Dairy farmers are having to get rid of milk because of lorry driver shortages and say there could be a collapse in the supply chain.

UK milk delivery service Milk and More has stopped customer deliveries after suffering a lack of staff.

Another dairy insider said it was the first time in 27 years the company had been unable to find workers and claimed parts of the supply chain face disruption.

Now the National Farmers’ Union is warning that immediate action is need to stop serious issues with food deliveries.

An NFU spokesperson said some farms are really struggling and people are having to throw milk away or cut back on production.

However, the Government has refused requests to allow temporary work visas for jobs such as lorry driving and fruit picking.

Around 100,000 truck drivers, who were mostly from Eastern Europe, have quit the UK, leaving the Government trying to fill post-Brexit vacancies.
