UK: Free annual veterinary checks for English livestock farmers

English farmers in England are to receive a free annual veterinary review for their livestock to improve animal health and reduce disease.

Plans were unveiled by Defra secretary George Eustice, who said the review would form the first stage of the Government’s Animal Health and Welfare Pathway.

The policy will come into effect in 2022 as part of Defra’s transition to a new UK farming policy.

When the scheme starts next year, diagnostic testing and bespoke advice will also be given to all commercial farmers of cattle, pigs and sheep who are eligible for BPS.

Defra will fund a yearly visit from a vet or vet-led team, which will be limited for three years before its effectiveness will be reviewed.

As part of the review, farmers and vets will share data which will be used to better understand the health and welfare of the national herd and flock.

“The review will recommend actions to improve livestock health and welfare, agreed between the farmer and the vet, that will be a way of measuring yearly progress. It will also signpost more support available to the farm for making these improvements, including the upcoming grants to improve livestock health and welfare,” said Defra.
