Grain treatment improves homegrown cereals

Cattle farmers are seeing the benefit of using a grain treatment as they feed more homegrown cereals and therefore improve performance and feed efficiency. Mixed farmer Matthew Jordon from Morpeth has used Maxammon for five years in his suckler herd of 90 pedigree Limousins. The farm feeds as much homegrown cereals and silage as possible, which has cut their bought-in protein by as much as 87%. He said the health…

Stable export markets good for beef prices

Market conditions are favourable for beef as prices in our key export markets stabilise and in some cases strengthen, according to IFA National Livestock Chair Brendan Golden. O’Sullivan dairy farm hosts farm congress delegates

The award-winning O’Sullivan dairy farm in Cork recently hosted more than 300 visitors as part of the European Dairy Farmers Congress, which took place in Ireland. The number of cows on the O’Sullivan dairy farm has grown from 140 cows to 500. However, restrictions may curtail this in the future. The family purchased the farm in 1953. Tight supplies, UK beef prices support trade

IFA Livestock chairman Brendan Golden said tight supplies of suitable cattle and strengthening UK beef prices are underpinning the trade. Despite attempts by factories to offer lower quotes, strong resistance from farmers is returning paid beef prices of up to 15c/kg above quotes. Strong demand for beef and sheep

Supplies of suitable finished cattle are tight on the ground. Despite attempts by factories to reduce quotes, demand is strong, said Brendan Golden, the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden. This year’s calf registrations have passed the two-million mark as calving season draws to a close.
