Beef sector should be a celebrated
“What’s on show today is testament to the passion, commitment and investment of farmers who take great pride in what they produce. Contrary to some commentary about livestock farming, we should celebrate what they do, not denigrate it,” said IFA President Tim Cullinan at yesterday’s (Sunday’s) Tullamore Show and FBD National Livestock Show. “The Food Vision beef sub group is currently looking at proposals for the future of the sector.…

Strong demand for beef and sheep
Supplies of suitable finished cattle are tight on the ground. Despite attempts by factories to reduce quotes, demand is strong, said Brendan Golden, the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) Livestock Chairman Brendan Golden. Golden said strong and stable beef prices in the coming months are vital as suckler and beef farmers deal with input cost increases that these farms do not have the capacity to absorb. He said supplies are predicted…

Weekly throughput for beef continues to fall
Supplies continue to tighten with last week’s (12 June 2022) beef throughput down for the sixth consecutive week when bank holidays are considered. That’s according to IFA livestock chairman Brendan Golden, who said the weekly throughput has dropped by over 7,000 head since the end of April to just 30,112 (last week) with further reductions anticipated in the coming weeks. Numbers of finished cattle are just not on the ground.…

Farmers should sell beef hard in current rising market, says IFA
Demand for beef in Ireland’s key export markets continues to drive the trade, according to IFA Livestock Committee chairman Brendan Golden. In a recent beef update on 13 May, 2022, he said supplies are not meeting demand and factories want cattle for immediate slaughter. Golden said UK prices rose again this week and, combined with the EU price, are resting 16c/kg above our price in the Prime Export Benchmark measure…

Watch out for those farmyard germs
Children who love rural life can get nasty farmyard germs from direct contact with lambs or calves, warns Dr Catherine Conlon, author and senior medical officer at St Finbarr’s Hospital in Cork. Even if the animals look healthy and their environment is clean, farmyard germs exist in them and their surroundings. The HSE’s Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC) recently shared an alert to this effect. This follows an increase in…
