Merrion Square Open-Air Art Gallery takes place every Sunday using the external railings of the beautiful Georgian Square in Dublin’s city centre to mount artworks. Founded in 1985, this weekly event is organised by Dublin City Council and provides a pleasant opportunity for visitors to not only view paintings but to meet with the artists and learn about their work.
Artists are only licensed to exhibit original paintings, so you can purchase original art directly from them. No commission is included in the price of the paintings and you will discover that prices are quite reasonable.
Most of the artists exhibiting on Merrion Square are full-time professionals. There is a variety of genres on display from traditional to more contemporary and individual styles. Merrion Square Open-Air Art Gallery also affords a weekly opportunity for artists to socialise, network and gain from encouragement and critique from visitors, patrons and colleagues.
Merrion Square is one of Dublin’s largest and grandest Georgian squares. Georgian Houses are on three sides, on the other the garden of Leinster House, and two national museums. Many of the houses have plaques detailing the rich and famous who were once resident. The attractive central park features colourful flower and shrub beds, a playground and many statues including the one of for Oscar Wilde casually reclining on a rock.
