Report from The West of Ireland Suffolks Premier Show & Sale

The West of Ireland Suffolks Premier Show and Sale on the 12th of August at Roscommon Mart was a notable event, especially following the achievements of some members at the Irish Suffolk Sheep Society premier in Roscrea the previous Saturday.

LSL Auctions observed the privilege of having Barry Murphy as the day’s judge. Originating from the esteemed “Murbro” flock in Castledermot, Kildare, Barry is a third-generation representative of a flock that began its journey in 1981. The Murbro flock, known for breeding elite Suffolks, remains a dominant force in the sector.

The event witnessed a significant turnout, with attendees both on-site and those who registered online through the LSL Auctions app. The sale began with initial hesitancy in bidding. However, the atmosphere shifted dramatically when ram lambs from James Rooney’s Benwiskin Suffolks in Sligo attracted bids of €1360gns and €1000gns. The Priorview Suffolks from Clare didn’t lag, securing bids of €1200gns and €1120gns.

With his expertise, Barry Murphy awarded the Supreme Champion of the show to lot 26 from Oranmore Suffolks, championed by Mark Grealy. This lot was later acquired for a commendable €980gns. Matthew & Brian Pearse’s Priorview Suffolks followed closely, securing the reserve with lot 20, which later fetched an impressive €11200. The title of Female Champion was awarded to lot 4 from James Rooney’s Benwiskin Suffolks, which went for €700gns. Zachary & Bernadette Silke’s entry secured the reserve, selling at €500gns.

With a clearance rate standing at 75%, it was clear that there was a pronounced demand for top-tier sheep with star ratings, those eligible for the SIS, and premium females ideal for replacements or as a foundation for new breeders.

In wrapping up, LSL Auctions would like to extend gratitude to all participants, both newcomers and regulars. Best wishes are sent to them with their new acquisitions. Kudos to the auctioneer for a job well executed, and thanks are due to Tony Conry, the Mart Manager, and the diligent staff of Roscommon Mart for their consistent support and assistance in facilitating the premier sale.

Do note, Roscommon Mart will be the venue for another sale on Saturday, 9th September.
