Kevin McDermott comments on Sheep Ireland’s €uro-Star Ram Sale

Sheep Ireland Manager Kevin McDermott

Sheep Ireland’s Elite €uro-Star Multi-Breed Ram Sale was an all-round success this past weekend.

Manager Kevin McDermott says that he is very happy with the day, as there was “strong commercial farmer demand. It is evident that trust and confidence is growing in the €uro-Stars, and there is a good market. We had a strong crowd on the day and a high 87% clear out.”

Notable aspects of the sale he said were that “there were grass-fed hoggets there, and they sold quite well. They sold just as well as well as the other sheep.”

Tullamore Mart catered for 500 animals, which would entail substantial logistics, was this a challenge? “Yes, it certainly was a challenge in keeping the sale moving, as we wanted to keep it as short and snappy as possible. It definitely took some logistics moving the just under 400 animals that went through the rings, but everything went according to plan on the day. The overall total of animals was less, as some were rejected for faults, or they weren’t brought through,” he says.

For the first time this year the full pedigree history wasn’t announced, but this didn’t appear to impact interest levels. “It saved a lot of time and didn’t affect the sale, as a lot of people had done their homework and studied the catalogue ahead of time.”

Mr McDermott concludes: “We were generally pretty happy with the quality of the stock and we’re excited to see the growing interest by farmers to get the best indexes. There were a lot of high prices paid, and we’re excited to see that farmers want to invest money in their flock and that confidence is growing.”
