Home planning permissions increase by over 21%

planning permissions

The latest statistics from the Central Statistics Office (CSO) indicate that planning permissions were granted for 8,463 new homes between January and March of 2022 – of which 4,687 were houses and 3,776 were apartments. The total amount of planning permissions granted for homes jumped over 21% in the first quarter of 2022, when compared with the same period last year.

Sorcha O’Callaghan, Statistician in the Business Statistics Division of the CSO commented that: “The number of houses approved increased by 51.7% in the year since the first quarter of 2021, compared with an annual decrease of 2.5% in apartment units, resulting in a total annual increase of 21.5% in dwelling units approved.”

This is the first time since Q2 2019 that more houses than apartments were granted planning permission. The number of one-off houses granted permission was 2,081, this is the highest figure since Q3 2009 and represents an annual increase of 25.3%.

It appears that permission was granted for 1,824 apartments in Dublin county in the first quarter of 2022, which accounted for more than 48% of the total apartment units granted approval in Ireland.

The Central Statistics Office figures show that the border region of Cavan, Donegal, Leitrim, Monaghan and Sligo had the lowest number of apartment units granted permission at 41.
