There has been a decrease in the number of sheep kill for last week, with the recent figure of sheep processed said to be at 53,141. The figures were released by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM). Analysts have compared the recent statistics to the same period in 2021 and there has been a significant change in figures, however throughput appears to be surpassing last year’s figures. But the figures released for last week reveal a 2,103 head decrease from the previous week.
The number of lambs/hoggets slaughtered last week came to 48,281 head, which represented a decrease of 1,449 head from the week prior. There were 653 head less ewe and ram slaughtered for last week, bringing the total figure to 4,859 head. The week-on-week figures show as follows:
- Hoggets/lambs: 48,281 head (-1,449 or -2.91%)
- Ewes and rams: 4,859 head (-653 or -11.84%)
- Total: 53,141 head (-2,103 or -3.80%)
The year-on-year figures, however, show this year’s throughput figures to date as 413,731 sheep processed for the period so far. Of that figure, 367,126 have been hoggets/lambs, with the rest made up of ewes and rams which were at 46,582 and a small portion of light lambs which were 23 head.
Compared to the same period in 2021, this shows that the number of sheep slaughtered for the period is up by up by over 43,000 head.
