Farmers protesting at a retail distribution centre in Co Kildare say they will not leave until some of their demands are met.
Up to 200 farmers are staging the demonstration with around 100 tractors, jeeps and other vehicles parked along both sides of the approach roads.
The Individual Farmers of Ireland (IFI) organised the ‘No Farmers, No Food’ demonstration at Musgraves distribution centre in Kilcock, which began yesterday (Sunday).
Trucks will food containers are not being allowed to access the facility, according to the IFI.
An IFI spokesperson said the 35 per cent figure indicated as being from agricultural carbon emissions “needs to be corrected”.
The protest group is against Government plans to reduce the slaughter age of beef cattle to 24 months.
An Garda Síochána is also at the scene of the protest and traffic is being allowed pass along the road and the main entrance to the site is not blocked.
The IFI said the protest will continue until there is some progress or commitments given on its list of demands.
“We are not going home empty-handed,” said an IFI spokesperson. “This is the last stand. The Government needs to wake up to the issues on farming and sop pushing them under the carpet.”
