Nestle raises awareness about palm oil supply in new video

A new interactive video has been launched by Nestle to raise awareness about the palm oil supply chain.

The difficulty of the palm oil supply chain is shown through a series of choices viewers are asked to make to ensure a sustainable palm oil supply chain.

Findings by the global food company showed that one in five millennial shoppers tend to avoid purchasing products containing palm oil, or will actively check to see.

Almost half said they tend to avoid products containing unsustainable palm oil.

Nestle hopes the experiential platform ‘Beneath the Surface’ will show how the choices they make under different scenarios can lead to a range of outcomes.

Head of sustainability, Nestle UK and Ireland, Dr Emma Keller said: “We hope that by having more open conversations about the complexity of sourcing ingredients such as palm oil, people can understand the issues and make better informed decisions when choosing products.”

The company said it remains committed to supporting small holders to produce sustainable palm oil and to improve their livelihoods.

In 2010, Nestle pledged to ensure palm oil supply chains are free from deforestations, and as of December 2020, 70 per cent of purchased palm oil was assessed as deforestation-free, according to the company.
