Ireland: Live cattle exports up 2,500 on previous year

Autumn exports of number of high-quality weanlings to the continent are expected to fall as prices in Ireland are above Spain, France and Italy.

Several exporters said weanling prices in Ireland are running at up to 25c/kg above those on the continent as feeders continue to push the market. 

Factory prices of R/U grade Charolais are reported to be €3.70 – €3.80/kg in Spain compared to €4.00 plus in Ireland. 

Current ringside tables show that the average price of a 300kg Charolais or Limousin bull weanling as making €2.65/kg, up 12c/kg on the same period in 2020.

New figures from the Department of Agriculture show that for the first 31 weeks of 2021, total live cattle exports from the Republic were up 2,521 to 197,657 on the same period last year.

Live exports to the EU fell by 4 per cent, to 144,132, while shipping to non-EU countries collapsed by 38.5 per cent from 11,887 to 7,313.
