The Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) has called for farmers to be given more control over how they obtain anti-parasiticmedicines in Ireland.
These medicines are only available from a farm vet who has to prescribe them.
In contrast Farmers in Northern Ireland and Great Britain do not need veterinary involvement in the supplying anti-parasitic products.
Pat Farell, IFA animal health chairman, said Irish farmers need to be able to source these anti-parasitic products in a competitive market.
“Within the EU legal text of the veterinary medicine regulation, there is ample room to provide a workable solution for all parties,” he said.
“Licensed merchants and veterinary pharmacies must continue to play a crucial role in provided advice, guidance and the sale of anti-parasitic products.”
Mr Farell said if the Government is serious about implementing a co-ordinated National Anti-parasitic programme then all parties need to participate.
