Demand for Irish pig meat products dampened due to Covid-19

Restrictions on international travel and tourism along with the slow reopening of foodservice across Europe have slowed demand for pig meat products.

This time of year would normally see high demand in Spain, Portugal, France and southern European countries. There is also reduced demand from China.

Quotes have emerged showing that there is a significant price differential of 8 per cent to 10 per cent between suppliers to the different pig processors, according to the IFA. It also found that countries with lower than average pig prices all held their quotes. 

The pig meat sector in Ireland is the fourth largest agri-food sector, accounting for 6.3 per cent of the total agri-food output and supports around 8,000 jobs. 

Agriculture Food and the Marine Minister Charlie McConalogue has given assurances that developing the Irish pig meat sector remains a priority. 

A new format for stakeholder engagement the Pig Roundtable was established earlier this year with a focus on the key strategic developments. Members include pig farmers, farm and processing sectors, Teagasc, Bord Bia and Department officials.
