Colder temperatures with sleet and snow and frequent rain are predicted this week with the Met Eireann issuing a yellow rainfall warning for 11 counties from this evening (January 18).
The Status Yellow alert is in place for Connacht, Longford, Louth, Westmeath, Meath, Cavan and Monaghan from 9pm on Monday night until 9pm on Tuesday.
Today will begin with scattered outbreaks of light rain and drizzle, becoming overcast and misty starting in the southwest and pushing northeast through the afternoon.
By this evening there will be heavy, more persistent rain over the southwest along western coastal counties, where some local flooding is possible. The temperature will become cooler with lows of 3 to 5 degrees in the north and lows of 6 to 8 degrees elsewhere.
Tomorrow (January 19) will be a wet, breezy, murky day nationwide with heavy falls of rain across the northern half of the county, bringing a risk of local flooding. Outbreaks of rain will continue in many areas overnight.
Rain will become persistent on Wednesday (January 20) and it will become cold enough for the rain to turn to sleet through the afternoon and evening in the midlands, south and east, with snow on high ground. It will be a cold day and frost will develop in lows of -1 to +2 degrees during the night.
The cold temperatures will continue into Thursday (January 21) with widespread showers over the northern half of the country and bright spells in the south. The brisk northwest breeze will bring showers and a mix of hail and sleet along with a sharp frost in places with lows of 0 to -3 degrees.
Sunny spells and scattered showers on Friday (January 22), especially over higher ground. Highest temperatures will be 3 to 5 degrees and another sharp frost will develop.
