Electric PTO a first for John Deere
John Deere has announced that it has launched the eAutoPower system which is available on the 8R410 model. This means that belts and shafts are replaced with electric motors powered from a socket on the tractor. This in turn replaced the mechanical power take-off (PTO). BEAM failure results in farmers having to fork out €18 million
Farmers are due to encounter some financial setbacks due to the poor design of the Beef Exceptional Aid Measure (BEAM) scheme. Beyond Peat reviews coir, pine bark and wood fibre as peat substitutes
Beyond Peat is a new €1.6m venture searching for alternatives to peat. But some experts have warned that it is unlikely to provide short-term solutions. Speaking at Trinity College talk, Horticulture Researcher at Teagasc, Dr Michael Gaffney, said any alternative to peat must meet economic and environmental criteria. “We’re going to have to find something that is agronomically acceptable, as it took took three decades of research to optimise peat.”…
Alternatives for food and animal feed under discussion
Talks are underway to address creative methods as alternatives for food and animal feed as the war in Ukraine continues. It’s understood that some of the options under discussion include wool as an alternative to fertiliser and the suspension of the carbon tax for seven months. Pig Exceptional Payment Scheme open to pig farmers
Applications can now be made for funding via the one-off Pig Exceptional Payment Scheme (PEPS). Minister for Agriculture Charlie McConalogue this week announced that pig farmers can apply for between €3,000 and €20,000. The notification sees some €7m worth of funding allocated to the Department of Agriculture by the national exchequer to cover the scheme. ICBF figures show that calf registration is climbing
Recent figures from the Irish Cattle Breeding Federation (ICBF) show that the total number of calves registered for the year to date is 856,878 head. The week ending 4 March 2022, totalled 139,451 head registered. Compared to the same period last year, registrations are 3,413 head further on. Unauthorised peat extractions focus of inspections says EPA
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has released its annual summary report, and has highlighted the impact of enforcement efforts conducted in 2021. The focus of the efforts was mainly surrounding ‘unauthorised peat extraction sites’ upon which the EPA had conducted 48 inspections regarding this. The EPA had confirmed that it had increased its enforcement activities throughout the country, with emphasis on the activities at 840 licenced industrial and waste installations.…
