Farmers whose land is included in greenway projects will be protected with a new code of practice.
It outlines how farmers can engage in the process and how voluntary land acquisition will work.
The document also explains how farmers can employ the services of an agronomist or property advisor when negotiating compensation.
Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and stakeholders including the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) have developed a new Code of Best Practice for Greenways.
There is a new once-off sustainability payment will be given to farmers affected by a greenway project if they co-operate during construction.
IFA president, Tim Cullinan, said farmers understand the importance of greenways to local communities but they can have significant impacts on farmers with land along the route.
“This code allows for a clear engagement process to minimise the impact and disruption to individual farms,” he said.
Compensation payments for farmers are divided into five bands according the length of land affected by a greenway.
Sustainability payment rates ranging from €6,750 for 100m in band 1 to more than €22,500 in band 5 for over 550m of land impacted.
