It is expected that more than 1,000 farmers will take part in a protest against climate change proposals.
Organisers say a recommendation in the Climate Action Bill to lower the slaughter age of cattle from 27 to 24 months by 2030 would destroy the summer grass-fed beef system and cost farmers €750/animal.
Farmers are being asked to gather at three locations: Navan, Kinnegad and north Carlow at 1pm on Sunday (December 12) but the location of the blockade is not being announced in advance.
The Irish blockage is being organised by the Individual Farmers of Ireland (IFI), which co-ordinated previous tractor demonstration protests in Dublin over beef prices.
IFI disagree with the Government claims that agriculture is responsible for 35 per cent of Ireland’s carbon emissions.
Appealing to all farmers to support the blockage, which will run on a 24-hour basis at the selected location the IFA said: “This is the last stand. There is no future in farming, as things stand.”
According to organisers, the blockade comes as a major protest in is planned in Brussels against the EU’s approach to climate change on December 13 and 14.
