Drones being used by thieves to scope out farms

Farmers have been alerted to thieves using drones and social media to check out farms before raiding them.

Thefts of quad bikes and high value tractor GPS systems are reported to be on the rise as they can be transported easily.

Over the past year North Wales Police has issued warnings to farmers and landowners in rural areas about the use of drones to plan robberies in advance.

Police in other areas in the UK including the East Anglia, Midlands, North West of England and Scotland are also investigating links between drones and rural crimes.

NFU Mutual rural affairs specialist Rebecca Davidson said thieves were also using Google Earth to identify farm buildings and escape routes.

Farmers are being warned to activate PIN number security codes in newer GPS models and to security mark equipment to make it harder for thieves to sell on.
