As Ukraine and Russia are global players in the feed and fertiliser trade, Russia’s invasion there has had global repercussions. Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue has announced that a National Fodder and Food Security Committee is being established in response to the current crisis. In a meeting held earlier this week, the minister together with officials from DAFM discussed problems that they may encounter as supply from that region is expected to be disrupted indefinitely.
According to the Minister, “our great sector is facing one of the most significant challenges in recent years. At times like these, we must take proactive steps to limit any potential disruption to our feed and food supply chains”. The group is expected to examine ways to lessen the impact of the conflict on Irish farms in the short to medium term and will meet for the first time this Friday, 11 March, 2022.
The Minister has reiterated that “there is a window of opportunity in the next number of weeks to make decisions to help us build resilience. The work of the National Fodder and Food Security Committee is the number one priority in the department.”
McConalogue has confirmed that he will meet representatives from the fertiliser, grain and importing industries this week.
