Bright outlook for hogget prices this week

The price of finished hoggets edged close to €160/head at marts on Monday, 7 March, 2022, showing an increase in factory prices in the trade of the product. Trade at marts continued to improve due to the factory price increase last week.

According to Ennis Mart manager Martin McNamara, hoggets were up by €3-5/head on last week. McNamara says a full clearance of the 400 sheep on offer was reported with prices for 50kg plus hogget reaching €163 and selling generally from as base of €150/head upwards.

As the price of hoggets moves upward, cull ewes remain a strong trade at Ennis with a top price of €189 for a 104kg ewe being achieved. Meanwhile at Kilkenny mart, figures for hoggets looked a bit brighter as a slightly sharper trade was reported. This as hoggets peaked at €165/head for 56kg. Butcher lambs traded from €2.95/kg up to €3.16/kg, with factory-type hoggets trading from €3.10/kg up to €3.38/kg. However, the price dramatically increased for cull ewes with the figure reported at €201.

Moving further afield to Raphoe mart, the figures on Monday for hoggets were €150/head up to €160/head. According to mart manager, Anne Harkin 41-47kg hoggets sold from €130/head up to €150/head, with 34-40kg lots making €110-130/head. Cull ewes reportedly met an “exceptional selling trade”, moving at prices ranging from €80/head for stores up to a top price of €214/head.
