Munster Angus Breeders' Mid-Season Sale Showcases Top-Quality Bulls, Achieving Impressive Clearance Rates and High Prices last Saturday, 22nd April

On April 22nd, the recently established Munster Angus Breeders held their second mid-season sale at Kilmallock mart, showcasing top-quality bulls that attracted strong trade. The club was pleased to welcome three first-time exhibitors at this event. Although on-farm sales remained robust, 22 bulls were offered out of the 31 catalogued. Each bull met the new Dairy calf scheme stockbull criteria, were breeder bred, Sire verified/Genomic tested, inspected, and weighted on entry to the mart. All bulls were also fertility tested. The event boasted a 96% clearance rate, with an average sale price of €3,050, reflecting the exceptional quality of bulls available.

Auctioneer Denis Barrett surpassed the €3,000 threshold for over half of the bulls sold, catering to a diverse customer base, including dairy, suckler, and pedigree herds. Seamus Nagle from Doolin Co Clare and Bullbank served as the show judge, selecting Greenvalley Vincent, a February 2022 4-star son of Rawburn Jagger Eric, as the show champion. The bull was bred by Pat Carmody of Ballybunion, Kerry, and sold for €2,800.

The reserve champion title went to Killernan Vigo, a February 2022 son of Bunlahu John G, which sold for €3,500. Bred by Martin Hehir of Milltown Malbay, Hehir also sold Killernan Unicorn for €3,700. Unicorn was a 4-star September 2021 son of Lavally prince.

The day’s highest price of €4,000 was achieved twice. First, Monemore Ulrika, bred by Timmie Taylor of Knocklong, sold to a pedigree herd. Ulrika was an August 2021 5-star son of Gabriel Pete from a homebred dam. The second bull to reach €4,000 was Ardglass Underdog, bred by Aidan Crowley of Charleville. This 4-star December 2021 son of homebred Ardglass rebel had a pedigree that included Mogeely Joe and Bunlahy John G.

Bawnfinny Vincent, a 4-star January 2022 son of Elite champion Drumcrow Night Rider, claimed the third-highest price of €3,850. Bred by Brendan O’Connell of Blarney, the bull won its class. Two other bulls achieved €3,600, including Beryl Vincent, a 5-star January 2022 son of Portauns Volcano, and Inchisine Vanilla Ice, a 5-star son of Cooldaniel Rekie.

The next Munster Angus Breeders sale is scheduled for May 6th, with all top-quality bulls once again fertility tested, Sire verified, and exhibitor bred. The committee extends its gratitude to buyers, exhibitors, judge Seamus Nagle, stewards Mark Flanagan, Ray Cronin, Amy O’Sullivan, and Sean Cronin, Denis Kirby and the team at Kilmallock mart, Fergal O’Gorman Photographer, and auctioneer Denis Barrett.
