Agriculture and Food Development Authority Teagasc invites farmers who want to develop sustainable sheep enterprises to join their BETTER Farm Sheep Programme.
This applies to lowland sheep farmers in the Midlands, North East, and Donegal, hill sheep farmers in the South East, and organic sheep enterprises nationwide. Those interested in developing sustainable sheep enterprises must register their interest by Friday, May 20, 2022, at 5 pm IST.
The BETTER Farm Sheep Programme covers grassland management, breeding, and production methods. How does it work? Teagasc’s research and advisory staff work with farmers to develop and apply technology relevant to sustainable sheep enterprises.
Must haves to register for the BETTER Farm Sheep Programme:
- Volunteer farmers enthusiastic about progressive development of their sheep enterprise
- And open to change to achieve better financial returns and labour efficiency
- Comprehensive review of farmers’ current system to identify opportunities for improvement
- Development of plan to improve flock management, feeding practices, breeding policy, marketing policy, grassland management, and farm facilities
- Implementation of sheep performance recording programme, based on electronic identification and guided by Teagasc research staff
- Recording of on-farm grass supply and flock management events
- Measurement of the farm’s financial performance through participation in Teagasc’s National Farm Survey
- Sharing of physical and relevant financial performance information through Teagasc discussion groups and organised visits.
