With growing uncertainty in the farming sector of late, comes a ray of hope in the form of a group of young enthusiastic agricultural-science students from the University of Dublin. The group of more than 100 students attended the AgSoc Careers Fair earlier this week, and were addressed by the Minister of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue.
“A decade or more ago, the typical agricultural science student studied to return to the farm, as an educated and highly trained farmer. And many of you will do the same, returning to lead the next generation of farmers and ensure we remain the best primary producers in the world,” said the Minister.
As the eager students were celebrated, the Minister reiterated their vital role in society and voiced that they had the world at their feet as many would pursuit roles that would see go on to innovate and pioneer new ventures within farming in the country. With a more varied and wide-reaching field of study, the students were informed of their prospects which included becoming pioneering food scientists and innovative food marketers, roles which are as equally as important as a farmer in the industry.
The Minister went on to thank the students for choosing agricultural science and food science as their area of study as he reassured them that he felt confident that the country was in safe hands, as we face into one of the most exciting periods in agriculture and farming.
