Solutions to the current crisis facing the country regarding input costs are more than welcome, this is according to the European Commissioner on Agriculture Janusz Wojciechowski. Additionally, the Commissioner says that he is not averse to the introduction of schemes regarding the production of grain and fodder, as this would maintain sustainability in the sector.
According to MEP Colm Markey, he met with the Commissioner earlier this week to discuss Irish concerns around fertiliser prices. Discussions included the concern on grain and fodder prices falling as a result of heightened fertiliser prices, but positive input was provided as they had highlighted the need for solutions due to the challenges facing the agri-food sector. Markey claims that they are currently in an emergency situation and require an emergency package, not just a few measures to address concerns facing the sector.
Wojciechowski has reiterated that objectives of the CAP strategic plan would be re-evaluated, however he says that flexibility is needed for member states to implement measures detailed in the new CAP’s national plans. Details around communication addressing the response from Brussels to growing challenges in the agri-food sector are expected to be released next week.
The MEP confirms that although the Commissioner is in favour of the suggestions, support from other commissioners is needed to deliver the funding support of these measures.
