EDF Renewables announces plans to build 50MW wind farm

Plans are underway to build a 50MW wind farm in County Carlow, with the project expected to be operational by 2026. The project, which is to be undertaken by EDF Renewables Ireland, is set to be located in Seskinrea and is planned to power more than 36,000 homes with renewable energy.

According to EDF it intends to submit the planning application by the end of 2022, this as tests are currently being completed on the site, while consultations with local communities are underway in order to assess the feasibility the development.

EDF head of development, Kevin Daly, says “projects like this are crucial to tackling the climate crisis and decarbonising our energy supply and will contribute to helping Ireland meet its target of delivering 80% of its electricity from renewable sources by the end of this decade.” A project team has been tasked with gathering wind data as well as mapping the environmental constraints on the site which is to be used to create a preliminary wind turbine layout.

Detailed environmental studies will also be carried out at the site, including ecology, noise, landscape and visual assessments. Once constructed, a Community Benefit Fund commensurate with the size of the final project will be established to provide funding for local community initiatives and activities.

According to Daly , Seskin Wind Farm will also make a positive contribution to the area in the form of the Community Benefit Fund, which will provide funding for local initiatives and activities.
