Planning permission is currently being sought for the new development of a €3 million in the project student accommodation project at Teagasc Ballyhaise College in Co. Cavan. This comes as the college has seen the launch of several projects since 2013 amounting to €2.9 million.
The projects include a campus-wide biomass heating system, a new dairy cubicle house and the refurbishment of derelict buildings into classrooms.
Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Charlie McConalogue says, “Ballyhaise college is critical to providing agricultural education in the northern half of the country and I am delighted that, through my department, €3 million is available to provide modern accommodation, and create an innovative learning environment for the next generation of students and future farmers.”
According to Teagsc Director Prof. Frank O’Mara a campus 10-year-development plan was created in 2013, which has steered investment in the college. It’s understood that a significant amount of work has been done to the college campus since 2012, including a roof of the house, relocating the advisory office, a car park and machinery shed.
Prof. O’Mara adds that accommodation for students on site is critical due to the location of the college in a rural location as it means students are close to both theoretical and practical aspects of learning.
