Dairy Beef Calf Scheme sees over €2 million paid to participating farmers

Details surrounding the measures of Ireland’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) Strategic Plan is to be announced soon. However, the exact date of the release of the details depends on the ongoing EU and national approval processes for the CAP Strategic Plan. According to the Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Charlie McConalogue more than €2 million was paid to farmers in the Dairy Beef Calf Scheme last year, which forms part of the strategic plan. At present, the 2022 scheme is currently being finalised and an announcement expected shortly.

Regarding calves born after the cut-off date for the programme in 2022, the minister advised that calves born after 1 July 2021, would be included in this year’s scheme. The minister claims that consideration is always given to the need for continuity of support for farmers and the collection of comprehensive herd data.

Fine Gael TD Colm Burke had requested a breakdown of the figures of the scheme for the period of 2021, in a parliamentary question raised on the matter. The figures reveal that just under 6,000 herds were registered for the programme last year with 132,300 weighings carried out, while a total of €2,040,680.20 were received by participating farmers.
