The Beef Innovation Network Europe (BovINE) will see further discussions on sustainability as it identifies areas of priority for its 2022 plan. As the project team for BovINE focuses on topics of crop and grassland measurements, farmers, advisors, organisations and researchers are expected to engage in further deliberations as they move beyond the current topics to assess matters further afield.
According to BovINE, nine EU countries are to join project discussions via national and international meetings in order to voice their needs for information regarding improvements in their practice.
One of the key thematic areas is environmental sustainability, which encompasses two priority topics:
- Tools for calculating and improving environmental sustainability on beef cattle farms
- Methods to enhance biodiversity on beef cattle farms without the need for large investment
Under the first topic, the focus will involve the use of existing methods to calculate the environmental sustainability of beef cattle farms, while the second topic of focus will identify innovations and good practices that can help farmers in various regions throughout Europe take on biodiversity measures in their practices.
According to project leaders the focus for the coming year will be driven by consumers, policy makers and farmers themselves, as they are currently evolving to deliver more sustainable farms. They add that, farmers need to be supported and guided to make informed decisions about the way forward.
