More fruit and vegetables are consumed daily by the Irish, compared to other European Union (EU) member countries.
A third of Ireland’s population (33 per cent) consumes five portions or more of fruit and vegetables a day, according to new data released by Eurostat – the EU body that publishes Europe-wide statistics.
One average, more than half the EU’s population (55 per cent) said they ate between one and four portions of fruit and vegetables a day. With women eating more fruit and vegetables a day than men.
The Netherlands has the second-highest level of fruit and vegetable intake with 30 per cent eating five portions or more a day. Followed by Denmark with 23 per cent and France with 20 per cent.
Eurostat’s report found that a third of people in the EU do not consume any fruit or vegetables on a daily basis.
Some of the countries with the lowest fruit and vegetable consumption include Romania, Bulgaria, Slovenia and Austria.
Meanwhile, the EU has approved this year’s budget of €186 million to promote EU agri-food produce in inside and outside of the union.
