Dairy group reveals ambitious plans to meet climate change targets

A European-wide dairy cooperative has announced plans to convert its entire fleet of milk tankers to fossil free fuels in its bid to become carbon net zero.

Arla Foods revealed the fossil fuel conversion is part of a long-term strategy to increase its climate change target for operations by nearly a third to 63 per cent.

The Danish company, will work with customers and farmers to reduce the total milage across the company through optimised route planning for milk tankers over the next decade.

The multinational group has outlined its intention to switch to 100 per cent green electricity and low-energy solutions across its production sites and offices.

Farmer-owned Arla said the accelerated measures to combat climate change are necessary in order to keep global warming to 1.5C.

CEO of Arlo Foods, Peder Tuborgh, said: “Together with our farmer owners, we have a tremendous appetite for leading the decarbonisation of dairy, so that people can continue to trust and enjoy dairy products.”

Arla has already reduced its operational emissions by nearly a quarter between 2015 and 2020. 

Mr Tuborgh said the company had ambitious plans for its farmer owners to to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at farm level.
