NI Poultry farmers are urged to tighten their biosecurity

Following the introduction of the Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) in the UK, all Northern Ireland poultry farmers are being urged to tighten their bio security.

With the migratory season underway there is an increased risk of infection. All bird keepers are being advised to remain vigilant and keep a close eye on flocks for avian flu symptoms.

Ulster Farmers’ Union (UFU) poultry chair, Ronnie Wells confirmed that several cases of avian influenza have already been recorded in the UK due to the migratory season

The introduction of the UK prevention zone has led to England’s Federation Championship Show and National poultry shows being cancelled.

UFU’s Mr Wells said it was important for all poultry keepers in Northern Ireland to step up their biosecurity to protect their farm, business and entire sector from infection.

“Everyone needs t be vigilant of the increasing risk that comes at this time of year, with outbreaks already in the Republic of Ireland and Europe,” he added.

“Only the best biosecurity will protect NI flocks throughout the coming weeks and months.”

Any suspicion of disease or increased mortality should be reported to their vet or local divisional veterinary office.
