Farmers up for the climate change challenge

Farmers up for the climate change challenge

Farmers will work with the Government’s new Climate Action Plan, according to the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) president.

The plan has set out guidelines to help fight again global warming for all sectors across Ireland’s economy including agriculture.

A reduction of between 22 per cent and 30 per cent between now and 2030 has been outlined for the agricultural industry.

However, IFA head Tim Cullinan claimed working with the Government to meet the environmental targets would come at an “enormous cost” to the industry.

“This is going to be extremely challenging, obviously, for farmers – farmers are very concerned around this,” he added.

“There’s a lot will have to be done here, farmers will work with this – but obviously there’s going to be an enormous cost here as well.”

Mr Cullinan said that while there are options available such as the low-emissions slurry systems, genetics and cutting fertiliser, to reduce carbon emissions, costing is paramount.

“An awful lot of research work is being done around difference additives that bovines can consume, and will help reduce emissions as well. There’s a cost in all of this. A whole of Government approach is needed around this immediately.”
