An Irish farm has stopped the sale of ducklings and goslings after a social media craze where the birds are filmed for videos.
Freeway Poultry in Co. Limerick confirmed they have suspended the sale of the animals to the general public.
Users on the social media platform TikTok create content by using the birds to film a “day in the life of a duckling.”
Commenting on the news, Freeway Poultry said: “Due to the recent TikTok craze and the huge animal welfare issue that has arisen as a result, we have suspended the sale of all ducklings and goslings to the general public.”
“This will not affect our farmers who rely on the ducks as part of their livelihood. This new craze is very concerning as ducklings are social animals and do not do very well on their own.”
People are being urged to surrender the ducklings if they are unable to look after the birds. The poultry farm asked anyone who has purchased a duckling and does not have the facilities to look after the animal to contact them or their local rescue centre.
Freeway Poultry also asked people not to turn up at collection points to purchase ducklings, as they will be refused sale.
