Online course launched to support mental health in farming community

A new scheme has been launched to support farmers’ mental health. The initiative helps spot the warning signs of deteriorating mental health and covers how to support neighbours and family who are experiencing mental health difficulties.

Organised by ICOS Skillnet, the learning and development division of the Irish Co-operative Organisation Society (ICOS), the course also outlines the various mental health risks for farmers as lone workers.

ICOS Skillnet has partnered up with health and safety education provider, the Chris Mee group to deliver the programme.

There will be two online workshops in June that will provide practical tips and advice for farmers about looking after and improving mental health.

“It is essential to understand that everyone experiences stress at some point in their lives,” said Billy Goodburn of ICOS Skillnet.

Mr Goodburn said it is reassuring for people to know it is a common experience for many and they are not alone, even if their work is solitary.

“This programme is about prevention and promoting ongoing good mental health in the farming community,” he concluded.

The course is free and a maximum of 10 people can attend the workshops on June 3 and 10. The workshops take place from 10:30am – 1pm. Email [email protected] for more information.
