Investigation underway after 270 calves found dead on a farm

A huge clean-up operation has taken place after hundreds of dead calves were discovered on a Co Galway farm in a major animal welfare incident.

Around 270 carcasses have been removed from lands in north-east Galway.

The Department of Agriculture, Galway County Council and the Galway District Veterinary Office confirmed an investigation has been launched into the animal deaths. However, officials said they do not comment on individual cases.

The calves, nearly all Friesian bulls under three months – are understood to have died from a combination of malnutrition, dietary, disease and respiratory ailments. The calves were found in a shed and in the yard area of the farm.

Galway County Council was notified of the situation on a farm on April 9 in North East Galway.

County Secretary  Michael Owens said: “Following that notification Galway County Council carried out a number of site inspections on April 10 and over the following week to deal with an issue of an environmental concern.”

The council said the issue was resolved on 20 April there are no remaining environmental concerns.
