Beef Farmers Pin Hopes on EU Grant to Boost Industry

Farmers picketing over the impact of Brexit on southern beef prices in recent months are pinning their hopes on an EU grant of €1bn this year.

The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) believes there is a risk of the UK being flooded with cheap beef which could damage Ireland’s market share.

IFA spokesperson Niall Madigan aid there were ongoing concerns about the impact of Brexit on the market and the threat of the UK doing deals with other countries.

Mr Madigan added: “It has been announced that over €1bn has been allocated to Ireland and we will be making a submission to our Government based on the losses incurred in the sector.”

Meanwhile, IFA president Tim Cullinan has called on the Government and EU to have a €400m support fund for farmers to address the market disturbances caused by Brexit.

Earlier this month the Irish meat industry said its exports costs had increased 40 per cent.
