Call for Citizens’ Assembly on agriculture

With the future of Irish agriculture and food production on the line, debate is raging as to possible outcomes. Market for organic produce on the up

The market for organic produce is flourishing, as Bord Bia’s figures show. It appears that the Irish market for organic produce saw a record 17.7% growth in 2020, which translated to €235m in total sales. In Bord Bia’s sheepmeat and livestock sector manager Séamus Mc Menamin’s opinion, growth was driven by the pandemic. Grain treatment improves homegrown cereals

Cattle farmers are seeing the benefit of using a grain treatment as they feed more homegrown cereals and therefore improve performance and feed efficiency. Mixed farmer Matthew Jordon from Morpeth has used Maxammon for five years in his suckler herd of 90 pedigree Limousins. Land parcel payments with scrub and woodland updated

Farmers can apply for Slurry Infrastructure Grant funding towards storing and using slurry in a safe and efficient way from autumn 2022. The Principal Research Officer at Teagasc, Gary Lanigan, has commented that the first step towards reducing GHG emissions in the agricultural sector is tackling nitrogen use. Changes to Nitrates Action Programme

Amendments to Ireland’s fifth Nitrates Action Programme were signed by the Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, Darragh O’Brien TD and came into effect on 28 July, 2022.
